9 Updates on US sending cluster bombs to Ukraine.

1. On Friday, The US confirmed it was sending the controversial cluster bombs to Ukraine.

2. These bombs release large numbers of smaller bomblets that cause destruction over a wide range,banned in more than 100 countries.

3. President Joe Biden called it a "very difficult decision".

4. Mr Biden told CNN that he had spoken to allies about the decision, which was part of a military aid package worth $800m (£626m).

5. UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak highlighted that UK had signed up to the Convention on Cluster Munitions, which prohibits the production or use of cluster munitions and discourages their use.

6. Spain's Defence Minister Margarita Robles states  reporters that her country had a "firm commitment" that certain weapons and bombs could not be sent to Ukraine.

7. "Canada is fully compliant with the Convention and we take seriously our obligation under the Convention to encourage its universal adoption."

8. The US, Ukraine and Russia have not signed up to the convention.

9. Germany is a signatory of the treaty, said that while it would not provide such weapons to Ukraine BUT it understands the position of the US.
